For shunting duties at Newport Workshops, the VR built two diesel hydraulic locomotives in 1959.

Unconfirmed reports say the diesel engines were surplus units left over from personnel carrier and tank construction after WW II.

The units were numbered M 231, 232.

At 1996 there was one in operation at the Steamrail compound, Newport Workshops
